Today’s users don’t just want a list of links; they want answers. Google shows short answers above results, voice assistants read one sentence aloud, and ChatGPT and Gemini write full answers. AEO prepares your content for that moment of “the answer”.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
| Core question | What success looks like | |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | How does my page rank? | A high position in the results list |
| AEO | Is my answer shown directly? | A short answer above results or read by a voice assistant |
| GEO | Does AI know and recommend me? | Your brand quoted or recommended in AI answers |
They aren’t competitors; they build on each other. Without sound technical SEO the page isn’t seen, and without answer-first content, visibility never turns into a displayed answer.
What does answer-first content look like?
- Write the heading as the user’s real question — “What is AEO?”, not “About AEO”.
- Right under the heading, give a direct 40–60 word answer: a complete definition in one paragraph.
- Then explain the details with lists, tables or numbered steps.
- Add the related frequently asked questions with short answers.
- Back numbers, dates and claims with credible sources.
Which formats become direct answers most often?
- Short definitions: “X is …”
- Step lists: “How to …? 1… 2… 3…”
- Comparison tables: “X vs Y”
- Yes/no answers with a reason: “Does …? Yes, because …”
What role does schema play in AEO?
Structured data (schema) helps engines understand what each part of a page is: a question, an answer, an article, a service or an organisation. One important caveat: since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites, and HowTo rich results were deprecated. FAQPage schema is still valuable for machine understanding and for AI answer engines.
AEO checklist for every page
- Identify the user’s main question and make it the heading.
- Write a direct, self-contained answer in one paragraph.
- Write sub-headings as questions too.
- Include at least one summary list or table.
- Add FAQs and the matching schema.
- Link the page to related content so the topic is fully covered.
Frequently asked questions
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO is about ranking the page; AEO is about having your page’s answer shown or read out directly.
Is FAQ schema still worth it?
For Google rich results, usually not (except authoritative government and health sites); but it still helps machine understanding and AI answer engines.
How long should a direct answer be?
Usually 40–60 words: short enough to read at a glance and complete enough to make sense on its own.
